A Mental Health Care Desert No More: Prince George’s County Announces Maryland’s First-Ever Crisis Care Facility
In moments of a mental or behavioral health crisis, individuals require specialized care—care that is often beyond the capabilities of emergency rooms and the training of law enforcement. These institutions are typically not equipped with the tools needed to address such crises effectively. Recognizing this gap, Prince George’s County is proud to announce the opening of the Dyer Care Center (DCC), the county’s first-ever crisis care facility. This center represents a groundbreaking approach to providing essential support for those facing mental health and substance use crises.
Radical Reinvention of Crisis Care
The Dyer Care Center will provide short-term personalized emergency care to community members experiencing a mental health crisis. It’s designed to function like an emergency room but specifically for mental health crises, providing emergency, ambulance, and patient drop-off services. The new facility helps ensure that individuals in crisis receive the specialized care they need, and diverts pressure away from emergency rooms, unneeded hospitalizations, and potential incarcerations.
Investments in Healthcare Access
As County Executive, I have prioritized significant investments in healthcare access following a comprehensive healthcare needs assessment completed late last year. These investments include the establishment of a new health center, securing funding for the Luminis Behavioral Health Facility, and developing a state-of-the-art cancer center in partnership with the University of Maryland Capital Region Health. These initiatives are part of our ongoing commitment to enhancing healthcare infrastructure and ensuring that all residents have access to the care they need.

A Model for the Nation
Prince George’s County is the first in the state to implement a grant of this kind, showcasing our dedication to leading by example. The Dyer Care Center partners with the 988 National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline and the mobile response team (MRT), offering 24/7 access to up to 16 guests at a time. Staffed by behavioral health professionals including psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, nurses, clinicians, and peer support specialists, the center ensures that no one is turned away and that every guest receives comprehensive, compassionate care.
