Hot Weather Safety Tips for Pets

With dangerously high temperatures expected this week, take extra precautions to protect your pets! Prince George’s County law prohibits keeping domestic animals outdoors when the heat index reaches 90°F or higher. Never leave your pet in an unattended vehicle, as overheating can be fatal. Be wary that doghouses can trap heat and hot asphalt can burn their paws.

Remember, if you're feeling the heat, your pet is too. If you see your pets overheating, panting excessively, struggling to breathe, or experiencing an increased heart and respiratory rate, immediately seek assistance from your veterinarian.

To report animal neglect or cruelty, call 301-780-7200 and select “0” after the emergency message.

Adoption

We are at full capacity! We urgently need your help finding loving homes for our dogs, especially our large and senior dogs. Without your help, we may have to find alternative solutions for our healthy, adoptable dogs due to a lack of space.

Our website features lost animals and animals available for adoption. If you want additional information about any animals available at our facility, please call 301-780-7200.

Medical Treatment

Getting the animals out of the facility and into homes is critical to getting them in the best position to succeed in the long term. Releasing treated animals after the appropriate period does not pose a health threat to the community.

To help reduce the spread of the disease in the community, ASFAC encourages pet owners to keep their pets updated on vaccines, avoid communal water bowls, and seek medical advice from a veterinarian if any symptoms like a cough or runny nose develop or worsen.

Kittens

The ASFAC has a large group of kitten-bottle babies that will be legally adoptable once they are eight weeks old. They need fosters to take them in for two to four weeks. Most infant kittens can eat solid food. Interested fosters can contact fosterpgcpets@co.pg.md.us for more information.

Surrender a Pet

Pet owners seeking to surrender a pet are encouraged to consider rehoming it with family and friends first or contact one of our County-approved rescue organizations to see if they can accept your pet.

Lost Pets

You can search for lost animals at our shelter if you've lost a pet.

Donations Needed

We greatly appreciate your generosity! We are in need of monetary donations, pet supplies, Kuranda beds for our dogs, and KMR milk and bottles for our kittens.
